작가노트

이번 전시 <표면 너머 Beyond the Surface>는 다채롭게 구현된 작품의 표면에서 출발해, 그 이면에 존재하는 물질과 공간, 그리고 사물이 삶의 공간과 관계 맺는 방식에 주목한다. 

 

표면은 사물의 가장 바깥에 드러난 경계이자 우리가 사물을 처음 마주하는 자리다. 그러나 여기 놓인 작품들의 표면은 단순히 형태를 감싸는 외피가 아니다. 표면은 여러 물질의 유동 과 만남, 응집과 변모의 과정에서 만들어진다. 건조와 소성의 시간을 거쳐 고결된 표면에는 그 과정에서 형성된 입자와 색, 질감의 흔적이 남는다. 완성된 표면은 하나의 결과인 동시 에, 물질이 이동하고 축적되며 변화해온 시간의 밀도를 드러내는 자리이다. 

 

표면 너머에는 또 다른 공간이 존재한다. 이중 기벽으로 이루어진 각각의 단위체는 저마다 내부의 빈 공간을 품고 있으며, 반복과 결합을 통해 하나의 형상을 구축한다. 서로 분리되어 있던 공간들은 중첩되고 이어져 하나의 기(vessel form)가 되고, 외부의 형태는 보이지 않는 내부 공간들의 관계를 통해 비로소 완성된다. 이때 표면은 안과 밖을 나누는 경계라기보다 여러 공간을 연결하고 하나의 새로운 공간을 형성하는 구조가 된다. 

 

이렇게 구축된 기의 형태는 다시 그것이 놓이는 외부 공간과 관계 맺는다. 작품은 독립된 조형적 대상으로 존재하는 동시에 생활공간 안에서 주변의 사물과 사람, 빛과 환경에 따라 다르게 경험된다. 작품이 점유하는 공간과 그 주위를 흐르는 공간 역시 함께 인식된다. 따라 서 보이는 표면 너머를 바라본다는 것은 작품 내부에 존재하는 공간뿐 아니라, 사물이 놓이 고 경험되는 삶의 공간까지 함께 바라보는 일이기도 하다. 

 

This exhibition, Beyond the Surface, begins with the richly varied surfaces of the works and turns attention to the materials and spaces that lie beyond them, as well as to the ways in which objects relate to the spaces of everyday life. 

 

A surface is the outermost boundary of an object and the first point at which we encounter it. Yet the surfaces of the works presented here are more than mere skins enclosing form. They emerge through processes of material flow and encounter, aggregation and transformation. Through drying and firing, the surface becomes solidified, retaining traces of these processes in its particles, color, and texture. The finished surface is both an outcome and a site that reveals the density of time accumulated through the movement, layering, and transformation of materials. 

 

Beyond the surface lies another kind of space. Each double-walled unit contains an internal void, and through repetition and combination, these units build a single form. Spaces that were once separate overlap and connect to create a vessel, while the visible exterior is ultimately shaped through the relationships among these unseen internal spaces. In this sense, the surface is not simply a boundary separating inside from outside, but a structure that connects multiple spaces and gives rise to a new spatial whole.

 

The resulting forms, in turn, engage with the spaces in which they are placed. While existing as independent sculptural objects, the works are experienced differently within the spaces of everyday life, in relation to surrounding objects and people, as well as light and environment. The space occupied by each work and the space that flows around it are perceived together. To look beyond the visible surface, then, is to attend not only to the spaces contained within the work, but also to the spaces of everyday life in which the object is placed and experienced.
